IDS plan to kill social housing in 4 years

The Times and Daily Telegraph have a story today – the latest hare-brained idea of the tyrannical despot called Iain Duncan Smith.

If you have worked for a year you get your council or housing association property given to you for nothing!!

Yes seriously!

The plan is outlined here in an article in 24Dash:

Iain Duncan Smith is keen for the party to include a pledge in its election manifesto to give people who have managed to stay in work for a year a free council or housing association home. As part of the deal, the recipient would no longer be allowed to claim housing benefit, and would have to pay out 35% of the proceeds if the house was sold within three years of the handover.

The rationale it then says is this:

According to Tory thinkers, money generated by the policy would be used to build new homes, while the cash saved on housing benefit would outweigh any other concerns.

Ok, leaving aside ‘according to Tory Thinkers’ – if ever an oxymoron in itself – what would this mean?

Take the Smiths, Wayne and Waynetta Smith who live with their 4 children in a council house in London.  They pay rent of £130 per week and the property is worth £500,000. They get £500 per week in benefits and housing benefit because of the cap and that is shortly to reduce to £440 per week should the Tories not be voted out in May

Wayne and Waynetta approach a bank to say advance us £25,000 and in year one they sign off completely and receive not a penny in benefits.  They then ask for £7k per year for each of the next 3 years to cover the HB they have lost but they sign back on to receive welfare benefits.  They put up the property as collateral.

The bank says ok we will give you £50k – £4k more than they asked for on day 1 and charge you 25% interest per year.  After 4 years the bank are owed £122k by Wayne and Waynetta and the house is now worth £600k.  So the bank force the sale of the house and get their money and Wayne and Waynetta are still left with nearly £400k in their pocket

OK I now that is a bit far-fetched as the bank would charge more than 25% being totally greedy bastards!

Note too the same principle works in depressed low rent areas ‘oop North.’

But where are the old the sick the disabled and the supported going to live?  Well it just so happens the banks and their friends have bought a lot of ex social housing properties which they lease back to councils en masse at 5 times the rent they were charging four years before and the Housing Benefit bill goes from today’s £24 billion per year to about £100 billion per year

AND of course the private sector gets their hands on and now owns a further 4 million plus properties and can charge what they like for them and can do whatever the hell they like to their tenants as they have no security and there is no regulation of the Private Sector landlord at all.

Apologies reader I have drafted this in about ten minutes and not the most articulate piece I have ever written I admit.  Although that is 9 minutes and 59 seconds more thought than this IDS plan.

Still, as an electoral bribe it is a huge one and a no-brainer for any social tenant.  Take it up and you will be fine and fuck your neighbour and anybody else- and yes I am being serious here. Why wouldn’t you take up such an offer you would be a bloody idiot not to take up such an offer!

Will it happen?  Not in a million years as the one seconds worth of thought IDS has put into this is evident.  Housing Associations are mostly registered charities and cannot simply give away assets as IDS wants them too – and that will be one of hundreds of reasons why this fairy tale from the deluded tyrannical despotic mind of IDS will not happen.

It is no more than a publicity stunt to buy votes and nothing more.  Vote for us Wayne and Waynetta and in four years we will give you £400k is the dangled carrot pre elections that never materialises after the election.

Finally, and I really DO need to hammer this point down the throats of the incompetent spineless ‘great and good’ of social housing – Do you still believe I was being ‘political’ when I have constantly stated this coalition is out to destroy the social housing model?

Will you finally get off your lazy arses and challenge the coalition?  Do you still believe you have ‘done all you can’ and so many other similar bullshit phrases you have churned out over the past few years?

Just as in the not so far-fetched example above it is YOU who own the properties and it is YOU who hold the negotiating advantage in any dealings with government over funding and finances and policy.  It is time you realised that and used that latent power as you hold the aces.  Yet you never have before and I doubt you ever will despite you having what the government wants and demands in the housing stock itself.

So please stop calling this the ‘daftest policy’ you have ever heard. Stop saying you are speechless at this etc, and grow a set of balls and tell IDS and this government (and the next government and the one after that) to go f**k themselves and to start dealing on your terms.

    1. Yeah well most of “us” knew a lot of things, just as is always not enough people with the balls to say so as our great orator says above, maybe its about time those looked at themselves seriously and thought again about their views and rapidly did the sensible thing before there is nothing left to worry about and both you, me and everyone else disabled vulnerable or not are out on the street without a pot to #%# in and NO help, regardless of unfailing religiously, following one or other apparently more crazy than the other party, who are ONLY out to catch votes, we’ve said it for months, years now but will the majority listen, I sadly doubt it as the country has No Balls full stop

  1. It’s not just social housing, the Tories are dismantling the entire welfare state.

Not all housing association properties would be ‘safe’. For those associations set up via LSVT, a lot may depend on the finer details in the Offer Document and tenants themselves may be able to lobby their LA for assistance in ensuring ownership of their homes passes from the HA to tenant/LA.

With social landlords increasingly involved with debt management and financial advice including, I believe, promoting financial ‘products’, many are losing sight of housing and are becoming little more than government henchmen in the stripping national assets game.

In the end, once the Tories’ plan is accomplished, all welfare provision will be in ownership and control of financial institutions and their officers and members.

  2. I was completely baffled when I read “According to Tory thinkers, money generated by the policy would be used to build new homes, while the cash saved on housing benefit would outweigh any other concerns.”

What money? By what mechanism will giving Council houses away generate any money?
The amount saved on Housing benefit will be significant, but will be spent on accommodating homeless families in bed and breakfasts. There will probably be no money at all to build new social housing, there certainly will not be enough money to replace council houses on a one for one basis.

    1. You were led astray by the word ‘thinkers’. Tories don’t do thought, like their icons of the ’30’s they are ‘men of action’. Which means you never engage the grey matter ever, and just stomp around acting tough when faced with people who don’t have clout to defy you. It’s amazing how quickly such raging tigers, when it comes to the homeless, disabled, unemployed, working poor, children in poverty, become little kittens when faced with big business.

  3. Reposted at and commented : Before anyone dismisses this as just another of #IDS ‘fag-packet’ ideas, read Joe Halewood’s take below: and to quote his closing point “ please stop calling this the ‘daftest policy’ you have ever heard. Stop saying you are speechless at this etc, and grow a set of balls and tell IDS and this government (and the next government and the one after that) to go f**k themselves and to start dealing on your terms.”
